| Kenenisa Bekele, Ethiopia | Born :1982 in Bekoji, Ethiopia. Bekele is the latest in a long line of Ethiopian world class distance runners. Bursting onto the scene as a teenage sensation in World Cross Country, he has completed an unprecedented five doubles of Long and Short course titles. In 2003 he claimed the World 10,000 metres track gold and confirmed that he had taken over Gebrselassie`s crown by breaking the 5,000 and 10,000 World Records in 2004. In the Athens Olympics he triumphed in the 10,000m . He retained his 10,000 World title in 2005 and lowered his 10,000 World Record in a Golden League meeting in Brussels. A hat-trick of 10,000 metres World titles was secured in 2007. In 2008 he regained his World Cross Country crown - a record 6th title. A Beijing gold medal continued his unbeaten streak in the 10,000 metres and he completed the double winning the 5,000 metres. In Berlin at the World Championships he maintained his astonishing record of never having been beaten at 10,000 metres as well as winning his first 5,000 metres World title. |
