| Michael Phelps, USA | Born : 1985 in Baltimore, USA. The greatest all-round swimmer in the world and lays strong claim to title - the greatest of all time. Winner of 6 gold medals at the Athens Olympics, Phelps has dominated the Individual Medley for both 200 and 400 Metres. Multi World record holder for both IM and Butterfly events. His world domination was confirmed at the 2007 World Championships where he won individual golds in 200 metres Freestyle, 100 metres and 200 metres Butterfly , 200 metres IM and 400 metres IM all in world record times. He won 7 golds at the championship. In the Beijing Olympics he became the greatest Olympian of all time in terms of gold medals won and he surpassed Spitz's 7 gold medal haul with an amazing 8 !! In 2009 after a 4 month lay-off he took another 5 golds retaining both his Butterfly titles in world records. In 2011 whilst losing out twice to Lochte, he continued his dominance in the butterfly. The 2012 London Olympics saw an end to his total dominance but he became the most successful Olympian in history with his 22nd medal and the first man to win golds in 3 consecutive Games . |
